HBH was founded in 2003 as a place to learn how hackers break in, how to protect your systems and a place to share information freely. Now 18 years later HBH is a non-profit with over 150 simulated challenges and virtual machine based labs with real world system and vulnerabilities.

With the new goal of teaching everyone the best practices for security and the new methods and tactics used by black hats, HBH aims to keep you and your team up to date with the latest advances in infosec.

This is the next generation of HBH and it's only made possible by the support of our community, advertisers and sponsors who together help fund the project. Different types of Hackers

Here are the type of Hackers that I'm currently aware of, if there's more let me know so I can update this section

  1. White Hat / Ethical Hackers

  2. Gray Hat Hackers

  3. Black Hat Hackers

  4. Script Kiddies

  5. Green Hat Hackers

  6. Blue Hat Hackers

  7. Red Hat Hackers

  8. State/Nation Sponsored Hackers

  9. Hacktivist

  10. Malicious insider or Whistleblower

White Hat / Ethical Hackers: These types of hackers are on the Good side of the law and mostly are professionals w/ expertise in Cyber Security. They don't breach systems without the permission of the Clients/Users. In other words, they are the Good guys.

Grey Hat: These types of hackers aren't on either side; Good or Bad. They may breach people's servers just for the fun of it or to test their skills. Sometimes may work with either side but again it depends on what's in it for them. Most of the time they will be Neutral.

Black Hat: They are very knowledgeable and skillful but have wrong intentions. These types of hackers are mostly against the law and steal data while breaking their system from the inside with complex coding/malware.

Script Kiddies: They can be considered new to the hacking world/methods. They use tools from other hackers and try to get into unauthorized systems, websites, or networks for attention. The knowledge they have can still be dangerous but they are not skillful enough yet.

Green Hackers: First of all, I didn't such a thing existed. But after further digging, they are considered to be hungry for knowledge and try to advance/learn to become a full-fledged hacker. They also try to learn from well-experienced hackers who have been doing this type of work for a while.

Blue Hackers: They hack to their advantage when they try to settle a score or use it to gain popularity. The hunger for knowledge is not there, but still can be dangerous enough to cause damage.

Red Hat Hackers: These types of hackers are the other half of White Hat Hackers. They will retaliate against the Black Hackers' attack and will not stop until they have successfully stopped the malware even if it means breaking the whole system.

State/Nation Sponsored Hackers: They are hired by the government to gain information about other Nations.

Hacktivists: They will hack government websites and be against their own governments in their own country or other countries. Hacktivists can be considered as an individual or as a group.

Malicious insider or Whistleblower: This type of Hacker can be an individual or group of individuals who have some sort of resentment against the organization they are working for. They would like any confidential information and conduct illegal activities within their employer.
